Pictures of the week:
From an adorable dik dik to the Northern Lights
Here's our pick of the pictures around the world this week
1. This adorable young dik-dik has been adopted by keepers at Chester Zoo after it was rejected by its mother.
Aluna was born two weeks ago but was unable to bond with its mother. Tim Rowlands, curator of mammals at the zoo,
keeps the baby animal at home and takes it to work with him. The sweet antelope is native to Kenya, Tanzania and Namibia
(PA)
2. Comet PanSTARRS is seen in the twilight skies in Los Angeles. The visitor from outer space will be bright and
visible in British skies until March 18. Stargazers are recommended to use binoculars around sunset to catch a glimpse of
the comet - which will not return to view in our lifetime. Its orbit around the sun is thought to take 106,000 years (Getty)
3. Prince Charles sits with Syrian refugee children at the King Abdullah refugee camp in Jordan, two kilometers from the S
yrian border. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall described their visit to the camp as "heart-breaking"

4. Dehydrated Tom Leeson stumbled across this human-like Joshua Tree in the blistering Nevada desert, USA.
Momentarily confusing it for a human the photographer snapped the picture for a keepsake (Caters)
5. Newly elected Pope Francis walks out onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. Just two days after the papal conclave began
Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Buenos Aires was elected Pope. He is the first Pope from Latin America and the first to be called Francis (Reuters)
6. One World Trade Center in New York emerges from the clouds in the night sky in a photo taken from a passing aeroplane.

in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 (AP Photo/Matthew Ziegler)
7. A father pulls his son on a sledge across snow covered grass in Edinburgh, Scotland. Britain returned to winter this week
as heavy snow and ice-cold temperatures visited the isles. The extreme weather caused schools to close and travel chaos -
drivers on the A23 between London and Brighton were stranded in their cars overnight for 10 hours (Reuters)
8. This is the moment a hapless raccoon got lodged in a tree after a night of indulgence. Photographer Susi Fischer
snapped the unlucky creature trying to seek shelter in a hollow tree after heavy snowfall - but misjudged his bulging belly
after a big dinner the night before (Caters)
9. The jagged landscape of Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah is expertly shot by Frances Davies,
who won the rural category for the National Geographic Traveller Competition (Frances Davies)
10. Members of Crew 125 EuroMoonMars B Mission return to the Mars Desert Research Station in the Utah Desert.
The mission aims to investigate the possibility of a human exploration of Mars and uses the Utah desert's Mars-like
terrain to stimulate working conditions. Outdoor exploration is done wearing spacesuits and carrying air supply packs
and the crew live together in a small base with limited amounts of electricity, food, oxygen and water (Reuters)
11. A Balinese man kicks up fire during the "Perang Api" ritual ahead of Nyepi day. Nyepi is a day of silence for self-reflection
to celebrate the Balinese Hindu new year, where Hindus in Bali observe meditation and fasting - eschewing everyday life (Reuters)
12. Royal marine Captain Chris McGinley takes a picture of the Northern Lights at Porsanger Garrison.
Troops took part in Exercise Hairspring 2013 which builds skills in cold weather survival and warfare training
for Royal Marines Commando Reservists in the mountain ranges near Lakselv, Norway (PA)
